      'All of us there': Reflections on language, literature and lifelong   learning. Inaugural Lecture, Professor Tess Maginess Professor Tess Maginess is Director of Open Learning in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen’s University. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Tess was born on the Tyrone Armagh border in a townland called Annaghbeg. She studied at Trinity College, Dublin (BA, Hons, English), obtained an MA in Anglo-Irish Literature from Queen’s University, Belfast and a PhD from York University, Toronto. Her thesis was on the work of Flann O’Brien. Tess has worked in adult education, community and rural development and journalism. She joined Queen’s in 1995. She has published several books and articles in a range of fields including adult education, mental health/illness, inclusive research, creative/narrative approaches and Literature. For her pioneering work in adult education, in particular, developing innovative partnership programmes with disadvantaged and excluded groups, Tess has gained many awards, including a National Teaching Fellowship in 2013. In 2011 she won the prestigious BERA-Sage Research Practitioner of the Year award. The Open Learning Programme was awarded a Queen’s teaching award and was nominated for the Times Higher Education Awards and the Aontas Adult Education awards.
